St Sernin Basilica

A masterpiece of Romanesque art and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, St Sernin Basilica is the largest remaining Romanesque edifice in Europe, if not the world. The church was built between the 11th and 13th centuries above the foundations of an ancient 4th-century basilica which contained the remains of Saint Saturninus (Sernin) who was martyred in 250 AD by having his legs tied to a bull. Enter this remarkably spacious edifice mostly constructed out of red bricks typical of Toulouse. Explore the ambulatory, a walkway that goes around the nave and side aisles featuring remarkable 11th-century marble reliefs, to discover the basilica’s exceptional radiating chapels in the central apse. Access the crypts housing a treasure of relics bearing witness to the prestigious past of this unique site of pilgrimage.
