1 / 5

1411: The beginning

The convents of St. Catherine and St. Cecilia are founded. An original clock tower, which can be viewed from the courtyard, remains to this day on the roof of the northern façade.

1578: A royal lodge

After the Reformation, St. Cecilia’s Convent is turned into De Princenhof (The Prince’s Court), a lodging for members of European royalty and other illustrious guests of city officials.

1647: City Hall

De Princenhof is transformed into City Hall, the seat of Amsterdam's government. Part of St. Catherine's Convent becomes the Admiralty of Amsterdam.

1655: The Admiralty

The Admiralty of Amsterdam takes over the entire property, connecting the two former convents and constructing the stately façade that welcomes visitors as the entrance to The Grand today.

1808: A prestigious landmark

The Princenhof becomes the City Hall once again. For nearly two centuries, it receives countless dignitaries, including King Baudouin of Belgium and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
