City description
Yet Mumbai is not limited to its captivating modernity. At the far south of the “City of Gold”, a mixed crowd occupies every square inch of Colaba, like everywhere else in Mumbai, where 20 million people live together and, caressed by the sea breeze, it converges towards the triumphal Gateway of India. The iconic stone arch, intrinsically linked to the former British Empire, perpetuates the memory of a past which is still visible. In the adjacent streets, colonial buildings in elegant style, a unique mix of Victorian, Art Déco and Indian architecture, bow under the weight of the decades. These high façades disseminate an old-fashioned atmosphere – you could almost expect to see Rudyard Kipling show up here. This nostalgia for a bygone era resurfaces at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station, gives a patina to the legendary Taj Mahal Palace hotel or even the Leopold Café, one of the oldest in the city.

Established in the Colaba district since 1914, the India Gate, a 265-metre high yellow basalt reminiscent of the Grand Arc de Triomphe, is undoubtedly the most visited monument in Mumbai/Bombay by foreign visitors. For locals, it is a pleasant place to stroll around thanks to its seafront breeze. The India Gate is a fine example of colonial architecture: it was built to commemorate the visit of the Emperor of India, George V. Paradoxically, it also evokes India’s independence. The final parade of English soldiers underneath its arches in 1947 remains forever engraved in the Indian collective memory.

It can’t seem to shake its nickname “Thieves Market”, but the unflattering title of this century-old bazaar is actually due only to an English pronunciation error. It’s so easy to get lost for hours upon end along the dilapidated alleys and antiquated buildings of this giant flea market. Get carried along amid the waves of people flowing through this city within a city on the lookout for unique finds. Chor Bazaar is also well known for its antique shops and stalls. On Mutton Street, for example, rummage through old photos of Mumbai/Bombay or Bollywood posters.
