Art & Design London, United Kingdom
Named after Henry Tate - the English sugar merchant and philanthropist to which we owe the lump of sugar - the Tate Modern & Tate British Museums stand out as two of the must-visit institutions of the London art scene. Set within a disused power station and brilliantly refurbished by Swiss architects, Herzog & de Meuron, the Tate Modern presents modern and contemporary art works from 1900 to the present. Always at the cutting edge, the museum also plans to open a new extension in 2016. Its sister museum, the Tate Britain, showcases major British works from the Renaissance period. Situated within a former prison, this museum is also delight lovers of architecture. To move from one building to another, enjoy a ride on the Thames with the Tate Boat which sets sail every 40 minutes.
