Explore its grand chambers and beautiful courtyard, and learn the symbolism behind the artworks and opulent furnishings gracing the property.

Tours are offered at 11am every day.

A seat of power

The building’s architecture and furnishings speak to its history as a site of influence and might. Above the entrance, a 1662 sculpture symbolises the power of the Admiralty through a Dutch lion, Lady Justice and the gods Mars and Neptune, while the imposing wooden table in the Grand Council Chamber is intricately carved with animals and a strophe from famed Dutch poet Vondel.

A landmark of love

The building witnessed countless weddings in its time as Amsterdam City Hall. Learn the story of the first wedding after Liberation Day in May 1945, marvel at the opulence of the Grand Council Chamber, setting of the royal wedding of HRH Princess Beatrix to Mr. Claus van Amsberg in 1966, and revel in the tale of true love told in the exquisite murals and stained glass in the Marriage Chamber.
