Oriental inspiration
While the hotel’s façade speaks to its Victorian heritage, the interior draws from its distinguished Middle Eastern roots. The dining room of the 1902 restaurant features a Moorish design, with elegant archways topped by a 75-foot dome. Roof columns are reminiscent of the Qalawun Mausoleum, while the ornamental lattice work is modelled after the Mosque of Ibn Tulun.
A destination for the rich and famous
In the 1920s and '30s, the hotel hosted an illustrious stream of royal visitors, including every King of Egypt and countless European princes and princesses. Among notable dignitaries, the Aga Khan III was the most regular, visiting during the winter to ease his rheumatism. He was buried in Aswan upon his death and his elegant mausoleum can be seen from the Terrace restaurant.
