Why is sleep so important while traveling?

Traveling long distances is an opportunity to focus on your comfort and well-being. Whether you're flying overnight or crossing several time zones, getting enough sleep is the most effective way to reset your internal clock, restore energy, and arrive feeling prepared for the next stage of your trip.

Scientific studies show that sleep not only makes us feel better, but it boosts the immune system, enhances cognitive performance, and helps to stabilize our mood. This is especially crucial for Business travelers, who need to remain focused, alert, and navigate between meetings and presentations. And for leisure travelers, restful sleep means arriving ready to navigate new cities and soak in every moment of a new destination.

Fortunately, catching quality sleep on a plane has become easier to achieve. Sofitel and Air France have pulled out all the stops with their Business class mattress pad, ensuring continuity of comfort from boarding gate to bedroom.

What makes the Sofitel MY BED mattress pad special?

The Sofitel MY BED mattress pad is specially designed to improve comfort on long-haul flights, creating the sensation of sleeping on a cloud. Developed in partnership with Sofitel’s MY BED collection – known for its high-end hotel bedding the mattress pad is tailored to fit the seats on Air France’s A350, Boeing 777, Boeing 787 and Airbus A330 aircraft.

The mattress pad features notches that align with seatbelt fittings, so it stays securely in place, and it’s easy to set up: simply slip the fitted end over the headrest and smooth it down. Whether sitting upright or enjoying a fully flat bed experience, it can remain in place throughout the flight, from takeoff to landing.

The materials are chosen for their ability to regulate temperature and relieve pressure, making rest more comfortable in any position. After every flight, each pad is professionally cleaned and repackaged in bio-sourced plastic to meet high hygiene standards.

The Sofitel MY BED mattress pad adds softness and stability, helping passengers feel like they’re floating on a cloud.

Tips for a good night's sleep in transit

While the right mattress pad makes all the difference, a great night’s sleep on an overnight flight involves more than just where you lie down – it’s also how you prepare. Here are our top long-haul flight tips for how to sleep on a plane and wake up feeling refreshed, no matter what your time zone.

1. Create a sleep-friendly ritual

Just as you would wind down before bed at home, try to build a pre-sleep ritual in the air. Change into soft, loose clothing, clean your teeth, dim your personal light, and apply a lavender-scented balm to signal to your body that it’s time to get some rest.

2. Hydration is key

Cabin air systems are designed to provide a clean and balanced atmosphere. Stay hydrated with still water or calming herbal teas, and avoid too much alcohol or caffeine. Hydration not only supports better sleep but helps reduce jet lag symptoms. Keep some hand cream and lip balm handy for moisturizing dry skin.

3. Bring the right accessories

Even in luxury cabins with a fully flat Business class bed, small touches can enhance your in-flight sleep. Consider an eye mask, noise-canceling headphones and earplugs, and comfort socks for circulation. Layering in a neck pillow or scarf for warmth can also create that cozy, sleep-inducing environment.

4. Choose relaxing screen time before bed

Unwinding with calming content can help ease you into sleep more smoothly. Opt for a gentle film, soothing music, or a quiet documentary instead of something fast-paced. If you’re using your phone or in-flight entertainment, switch on night mode and lower the brightness to create a more sleep-friendly atmosphere.

5. Eat light and early

Avoid heavy meals right before sleeping. A light, nutritious meal helps your body digest more easily and prepares you for rest. Air France’s curated Business class dining service is timed thoughtfully to enhance comfortoffering fine French cuisine without compromising your sleep schedule.

6. Follow a sleep schedule

Adjust your sleep and wake times gradually before your flight to better align with your destination’s time zone. Once on board, reset your watch or phone to your arrival time, and try to sleep according to that schedule. A small dose of melatonin (0.5-3mg) can help you get to sleep and make jetlag less severe.

7. Practice mindfulness and meditation

Stress and stimulation can keep the mind awake, even when the body is ready for sleep. A few minutes of deep breathing, meditation, or guided audio relaxation can help quiet your thoughts and invite sleep in, even at 35,000 feet.

8. Choose flat-bed Business class flights

For your next long-haul journey, consider Air France Business class, where seats transform into fully flat beds measuring 2 m in length and 70 cm in width. Enhanced with the Sofitel MY BED mattress pad, ergonomic support, and adjustable lighting, each suite offers ultimate comfort and relaxation. On its latest Business cabin, privacy features include sliding doors and a “Do Not Disturb” function, while center seats for couples can convert into a shared space with a cocktail table – perfect for rest, work, or dining together.

Luxury from takeoff to touchdown... and beyond

The partnership between Sofitel and Air France is setting a new benchmark for in-flight comfort, transforming the travel experience from the moment you board to when you arrive at your hotel – and beyond. By introducing the Sofitel MY BED sleep experience to Air France’s Business class, the journey becomes an extension of the brand’s signature luxury and focus on well-being.

Travelers can also bring that comfort home, thanks to the Sofitel Boutique’s curated MY BED collection of mattresses, pads, linens, and pillows. Whether you're flying overnight to New York or on a long-haul journey to Singapore, the aim is consistent: to make in-flight rest as luxurious and rejuvenating as a night at a Sofitel hotel.

Because it’s no longer just about how to sleep on a plane – it’s about how to sleep in style.
