City Description
Much like the country of which it stands proud capital, Montevideo is iconoclastic, a genuine exception. Housing half of the country's population, it represents the nerve centre of all Uruguay's activities.
This magnificent city built in the first quarter of the 18th century by the Spanish was, many times over, the subject of envy, owing to its strategic position in Uruguay, and equally within South America.
Travelers will initially be moved by the setting, both peaceful and friendly. Montevideo is a city which boasts contagious joy, and it is this exact spirit, this open mentality to the world which makes it a good city to live in.
Strongly influenced by subsequent colonial architecture, it features white on delightful facades boasting unrealistic charm and unveils its heart, with imposing, blossoming areas and perfect symmetry. The Plaza Independencia is one of the most evident examples. Its rounded, rectangular shape allows us to glimpse, at each of the corners, a vast oasis of greenery with bordering palm trees, as if to highlight its attachment to the nature. At the center, the mausoleum of General Artigas, dedicated to the national hero, boldly stands as if to protect the city.
At the end of the square, and the main talking point, stands the monument of Palacio Salvo and its arches, inspired by rue de Rivoli, symbolic of the eclecticism and prosperity, which, in itself, characterises the city.
How can you resist the famous "Carreta" when strolling along avenue Lorenzo Merola? Representative of the city's trading past, this bronze monument dating back to 1934, is a magnificent, historical statement.
