City Description
Quite symbolically, the city that's nicknamed Solo (from its real name, Surakarta), takes its place at the very heart of the resplendent island of Java. This former village, in its day the capital of the kingdom of Mataram, is one of the most eloquent ambassadors of Javanese beauty.
Nestled in the center of a valley between Yogyakarta and Semarang, it is this city's architectural treasures and many secular influences that make it so appealing. As such, the temple of Candi Cetho, paying homage to love and fertility, will immerse visitors in the erotic mysteries of a unique building. Made of multiple terraces arranged in tiers, its statues and effigies, each one more carnal and fascinating than the next, are a feast for the senses.
Solo proudly shows off the magnificent blue facade of the Kraton - the name for the royal palace - and its scrolls combined with bas-reliefs and sumptuous elegance. The city is like an open-air museum, a blessing. A little further away stands a Chinese temple which grabs your attention with the characteristic opulence of the walls and this bright red color, confirming that it is this commitment to art and diversity that sustains the whole of this city.
Devoted over the centuries, Surakarta also gives prominence to the Hindu culture and its traditions, imbued with hedonistic and human meanings and values. The soul of Indonesia beats strongly here, just like the Lawu volcano that stands alongside the city. Smoky flanks betray the unfaltering passion of this "old man", never to have choked again since 1885…
As a gift to humanity, Solo continues, through the centuries, to generously deliver its secret, that of a love story between people and their land.
