City Description
Florianópolis, or "Floripa", as the Brazilians call it, is a corner of Eden that oozes Brazilian sensuality. It spreads its way gently along this extraordinary beach, named Joaquina, on which surfers and local residents converge.
The island-city of Florianópolis is quite amazing, as is its ancient tree located on the city's central square. It offers a delicate and natural contrast to the stunning Hercilio Luz bridge which connects the island to the mainland. The same paradox can be found with Praia Brava and its enormous beachfront, and the small island of Campeche with its crystal-clear waters, accessible by boat. Although travelers from all around the world are attracted by the quality of life here, Florianópolis is best known for having some of the country's most beautiful beaches. It remains nevertheless, a city with a ubiquitous Brazilian identity.
Testament to this can be found in its colorful city center, for example, or its Portuguese-style neighborhoods, dating back to the time when the area was colonized by the Azoreans. A detour towards Santo Antônio de Lisboa will give you a good glimpse of this, although the best place just a stone's throw from Florianópolis remains Barra de Lagoa. Small, traditional villas perched on a hill tinged with vivid green overlook a peaceful cove, framed by a few colorful boats. This is an invitation to some real, Brazilian-style relaxation, helped by the natural pools and a temperate sea water. All you need to do then is sit at a table with a few locals and enjoy a game of dominoes. More adventurous visitors can continue their hike to Costa da Lagoa. In this small fishing village, they'll be able to enjoy a salad of succulent shrimp or a fish moqueca, in as tropical a setting as you could imagine.
