Art & Design Amsterdam, Netherlands
It was no coincidence that the Saint Petersburg Hermitage Museum chose Amsterdam as the home for its largest outpost. Tsar Peter the Great stayed here before starting work on the construction of his city, and the Dutch offered him the benefit of their expertise to tame the marshy landscape. Housed in a former retirement home that is now a listed historic monument, the Hermitage Amsterdam puts on a temporary exhibition every six months showcasing stunning exhibits from the Russian museum. You can also explore the two permanent collections celebrating the history of Russia and its relationship with Holland and the history of Amstelhof, the three hundred year old retirement home.
